Introduction to the Speaker：Sunny Xiang is an Associate Professor of English at Yale University. Her research interests include literary and cultural studies in Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas.

Introduction to the Lecture: This lecture is based on the speaker’s monograph Tonal Intelligence: The Aesthetics of Asian Inscrutability During the Long Cold War (Columbia University Press, 2020). It explores the research method of “tone” by reading Korean-American poet Don Mee Choi’s 2016 mixed-media book Hardly War and the journal Intelligence Research. The speaker reinterprets archives activated by the Cold War and attempts to propose solutions to racial dilemmas.
