Introduction: How should we use the results of Korean language studies? Language is the most basic tool of people’s life. Through language, we seek to understand culture, history, and society. In particular, food is a common concern for all people, so it is important to understand the culture, history, and society of East Asia and the world through food-related language. Is "ketchup" originally from China? Which country do “noodles with soybean paste” which first appeared in Incheon, Korea, “seafood noodles” stemming from Nagasaki, Japan, and “udon noodles” known as Japanese food belong to? From rice to beverages to tableware and cooking utensils, we explore a comprehensive understanding of East Asia and how it became the center of the world through the language associated with food.
About the Speaker:Han Seong-u, a doctor of Department of Korean Language and Literature at Seoul National University, a professor and doctoral supervisor of Korean Linguistics at Inha University, Korea, and a member of the Korean Language Committee of MBC. He has published more than 20 papers, including "Pronunciation Education Program for Korean Learners in the Chinese Language Circle", and more than 10 volumes of academic books, including "The Language of Korean Food", of which "The Language of Dialects" was awarded as "Excellent Book by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism" and "Recommended Book for Youth by the Korea Publishing Culture Industry Promotion Agency". The Language of Korean Food" was selected as a bestseller and won the Chosun IIbo Writer's Award in 2016.
